![]() ![]() ![]() Capitalism, in the form of neoliberal reason, defeated democracy. Capitalism did not just defeat communism. Wendy Brown’s Undoing the Demos: Neoliberalism’s Stealth Revolution dismantles the fantasy formatting this vision of liberal democratic triumph. There was no alternative to liberal democracy, capitalism’s political form. Contrary to what had appeared in the class compromise following WWII as social democracy’s merging of liberalism and communism, history ended with the defeat of socialism and the “unabashed victory of economic and political liberalism.” Communism was swept into history’s dustbin. The great ideological struggles characteristic not only of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries but of history as such had come to an end. In 1989, Francis Fukuyama famously announced the end of history. ![]() Undoing the Demos: Neoliberalism’s Stealth Revolution. ![]()

I also liked the scenery: set in the Florida Keys, in a salmon-colored beach house that the hero calls Big Pink, there are wonderful descriptions of the Gulf, of walks on the beach, of overgrown greenery, of grand old Florida houses. I love when King is able to describe what it’s like to make art, to feel the need to make art, and especially the down side of it: the emptiness and exhaustion that come after working on art, the constant self-doubt and that nagging belief that these people only like your work because they like you. I loved that the main character, Edgar Freemantle, is an artist. Well, now I’ve read it, and: it’s not one of my favorites. Which, actually, is probably entirely appropriate. And in terms of book format, I didn’t like it. Maybe that’s the reason, actually: maybe Duma Key sat on the shelf for so long because it’s not a hardcover we bought it in mass market paperback, and what’s more, we bought one of those tall paperbacks – the “Summer beach read” edition, I’ve seen them labeled. My wife and I read every Stephen King book, and we generally get them and read them within a year or so of publication this is one author we are willing to pay full hardcover price for. For some reason it took me a while to get to this one. ![]() ![]() When she asks him the same question, he replies, “I can’t procreate. “And you and Earn? You guys gonna… pop out another baby?” Darius asks Van, who responds that she has a boyfriend. ![]() They hop into a van together, and the uncomfortably strained chatter commences. It happened in “The Dog” episode of Seinfeld after Jerry bows out of seeing a movie and George and Elaine (“Just me and George?”) have an awkward realization that the only thing they have in common is making fun of their friend, and it happened in the second episode of Atlanta season three.Īfter Earn (Donald Glover) wakes up late in Copenhagen, he asks Darius (LaKeith Stanfield) to pick up Van (Zazie Beetz) in Amsterdam for him. One of my favorite TV tropes is when two characters who have spent tons of time together in a group setting realize they have nothing to talk about when it’s just them. ![]() ![]() I wish I could explore them all, but I can’t. The owl, Tsubasa, the dog, the dowager’s butterflies, Proust, the fish, the potted plant, etc etc. Random little (& big) characters & objects are placed into the story that serve some sort of purpose- or not. There is so much subtle symbolism in this book and infinite avenues to explore. I actually very much liked Ushikawa’s chapters since they provided a reprieve between Tengo & Aomame’s waiting near the end. However, I do agree that the pacing in the end was a bit slow and some of the paragraphs were repetitive, especially on Aomame’s end. It didn’t feel like a 1,000+ page novel to me. I know some people said the novel’s length was too much, but I honestly felt fine with it. The film translates this by having Johnson offer commentary in voiceover as well as deliver asides directly to the camera (another similarity to the ’99 Mansfield Park). ![]() Whereas Austen’s Anne is mature and measured, Anne seems like a woman out of time: She chugs wine at every opportunity, and at one point she wonders aloud why people assume “all women want is to be chosen by any eligible bachelor,” as though she’s ignorant of her own socioeconomic circumstances as a denizen of the early 19 th century.Īusten’s novel uses third-person narration, but one with many insights into its heroine’s observations and opinions. Perhaps this helps explain why Bass and Winslow have changed Anne’s personality considerably, much like the 1999 adaption of Mansfield Park did with Fanny. ![]() ![]() ![]() Kami Garcia tries to fit so many elements into this story that many of the core themes don’t get the attention they deserve and characters are left underdeveloped.
